Founded by a group of art students and amateurs in 1871, Salmagundi progressively grew from its humble beginnings as an informal sketch class to an internationally recognized art organization within a decade. By 1917, its members were able to move into our present location at 47 Fifth Avenue, and created a gallery as beautiful as the artwork it showcased... a tour de force with a soaring ceiling and a spectacular glass skylight. Below is a photograph of that gallery and skylight as they existed when the works of such great artists as Carl Rungius, Maynard Dixon, Daniel Garber, Edward Potthast, Edgar Payne, Ernest Lawson and Ogden Pleissner, among others, were exhibited. It is our hope, with your help and support, to restore the gallery to its former beauty and bring it up to 21st Century standards.
