Neil Allen's Vibrant Greenwich Village
Patrons' Gallery, October 21, 2019 - October 26, 2019
Gallery hours: Mon-Fri 1-6, Sat & Sun 1-5PM
Neil Allen is a New York-born, Greenwich Village-based photographer with a sharp eye for city life and color. In the spirit of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Garry Winogrand, among others, his images present singular moments and expressions that convey life's humor, irony, beauty and the subtle, sometimes metaphysical, connections between living creatures and their surroundings. He is proud to be an Artist Member of the Salmagundi Arts Club and the Salmagundi Photo Group.
Neil is excited to present at New York's Salmagundi Arts Club his first one-man photo exhibition and book, "Neil Allen's Vibrant Greenwich Village". He invites you to be with him and see the Village that he sees. At a time when gentrification and high real estate prices are assaulting and redefining Greenwich Village, Neil's photos are life-affirming. His people, places, and scenes are full of vibrancy and the special character that is Greenwich Village. In Washington Square Park we observe the freedom of expression and the artistic and personal self-expression for which Greenwich Village is world-renowned. On Village streets and interiors we encounter moments and expressions of whimsy and color. Finally we view quintessentially Greenwich Village cityscapes and scenes. The show is concurrent with the Salmagundi Art Show celebrating 50 years of the Greenwich Village Society for History Preservation.
Since joining the Club, Neil has come to enjoy and appreciate the Salmagundi Club as a truly creative, nurturing, and singular place. He has benefitted greatly from the advice and assistance of the members of the Salmagundi Photo Group, his fellow Salmagundians, artists and friends, the generous mentorship of Robin Davis of Atlanta and Anthony Almeida of Brooklyn and the Salmagundi Club, the helpful prodding and encouragement of Carole Teller, and most of all, the limitless support of Laura Demarco. Since he first began showing his photos in 2018, he has received numerous awards in Salmagundi Club exhibitions and was a Winner in the Photo Review 2018 Competition, a Special Web Selection in the Photo Review 2019 Competition, an Honorable Mention in the NYC4PA HUMANS 2018 and had two shortlisted selections for the Britishlife Photography Awards.
