This 3 day workshop will focus on painting the figure in an environment, and will take advantage of the spectacular architectural details of the landmark Salmagundi Club mansion in the heart of Greenwich Village.
In this workshop, attendees will explore how to approach the figure in the context of the magnificent beauty and rich artistic traditions of The Salmagundi Club. In the historic setting of the Parlor, participants will be guided through the process of painting the figure while addressing other compositional elements of the interior from their unique perspective in the room.
A variation of painting strategies and observation techniques will be employed to bring the painting forward. We will begin with broad brushwork in our pursuit to develop the image from abstraction to fruition. Subjects to be covered are basic principles of composition, how to progress thought the different stages of the painting process and how to see colors and translate them into paint. Participants will be introduced to the sight size method and other tools of observation, such as the various ways in which a mirror can be used to advance ones understanding of visual information.
Experience in drawing and painting is an advantage but not a must. The structure of the workshop will be a combination of painting demonstrations and individual feedback.
