A bit of Salmagundi History from 1914:
In the past, the time around Halloween was usually the time of the Get Together Dinner, which kicked off the Club's season. These were often raucous events filled with laughter and music. In 1914, the Dinner was held on Halloween night and recorded for posterity both by the New York Times and Charles S. Chapman in his charcoal drawing of the event. The New York Times described the scene:
“Within the gallery of the Salmagundi Club at 14 West Twelfth Street more than 150 artists and members of the club assembled at the annual “Get Together Dinner” last night, and the setting for the event suggested a grotto of the Ice King, with grinning jack-o-lanterns made from pumpkins suspended amid the frost-like streamers and corn stalks and ears of corn, on Halloween. On the tables the decorations included Autumn leaves, and witches with broomsticks in hand were represented on yellow papers, everything pertaining to the spirit of a Halloween party...."
