September Manhattan Art Book Club
Parlor, September 10, 2016
The topic of the book is meaning and content in Greek art of the Classical period (480-320 BC). The author Professor Pollitt, Professor of classical art and archaeology Yale University, 1962-1999, reminds us that the visual arts in Greece, as elsewhere, were primarily vehicles of expression. While covering formal development he also relates this to the social and cultural history, which it reflected and from which it grew. While his subject is art, he refers frequently to the literature and philosophy of the period.
