Zhu Jinlou: A Retrospective Exhibition
Upper Gallery, January 26, 2020 - February 01, 2020
Zhu Jinlou (1913-1992) was professor and chief librarian of China Academy of Art, an art educator, an art critic and a painter of modern China.
Zhu Jinlou devoted his life to art and art education and made contributions to both art and art criticism. Being the editor-in-chief of Chinese Comics, he was regarded as a renowned Chinese cartoonist in his early life. Later he chose gouache and oil painting as his career. By learning from diverse artistic languages of painting and from nature’s creations, he gradually developed his unique style. Zhu Jinlou is also a highly-renowned art critic who has published many articles, among which many brilliant and profound thoughts.
For various reasons, many of the artist's early gouache and oil paintings are lost . The exhibited works are mainly produced during the late 1970s to the mid 1980s. At that time, China started to reform and launching the opening-up policies while the living conditions of artists greatly improved. These works represent this free spirit.
