"WHITHER THE PALIMPSEST?

Many favorite watering holes have their mascots: arthritic bulldogs that slobber over when you head for the free lunch counter, tiger-striped tabbies installed as mousers who fiercely contend for some shred of the blue-plate special; but who among you would have suspected what bartender Carlos was harboring under the Salmagundi bar?

A PALIMPSEST!

This hitherto unsuspected resident was uncovered by Ritter, who has been conducting the summer building renovation, when he became part-time archaeologist in peeling the historical layers of ancient flooring behind the bar in preparation for a brand-new surface.  This involved removal of the following:

Linoleum I
Linoleum II
Plywood
Hardwood I
Hardwood II
Tile

At times during record heat, all this has been relegated to huge, heavy contractor’s garbage bags piled up and ready for final removal from the scene, no longer underpinning for bartenders’ bunions.  When we all return to sit & sip by the marionettes, our resident palimpsest will be but a memory, something for the Sunday Times crossword puzzle."
